Recension - Blu-ray/DVD

”Wristcutters – A Love Story” är du urcoola titeln på Goran Dukic senaste film som handlar om en parallell värld där personer som begått självmord hamnar och fortsätter leva.

Huvudpersonen Zia har valt att avsluta sitt liv efter att hans flickvän lämnat honom och vi får följa med honom till denna andra värld befolkad av andra liksinnande. Här påbörjas en roadtrip som tar honom och två till peroner genom landskapet i denna nya plats.

Det som först ska säjas är att jag blev positivt överraskad av denna film. Förväntandes ett tungt drama om självmordsbenägna får vi istället se en något melankolisk men samtidigt verklig och ärlig berättelse om tre personer som finner genemskap i deras raserade värld. Man kommer nära och skrattar, gråter och känner medlidande för deras nya liv och sökande efter svar och en väg tillbaka.

Samtidigt har filmen fyllts med små underbara detaljer som ett oändligt hål under ett av bilens säten som suger upp allt som hamnar i det och en kult med människor som kommer till den parallella världen efter att ha begått massjälvmord. Dessa detaljer är total fingertoppkänsla från regissören som räddar filmen från att kunna bli en enda lång pretantiös plåga till att vara en väldigt underhållande pektorial väl värd att se.

Goran Dukics manus och regi rör sig smidigt genom det känsliga ämnet och även om filmen inte gör ett alldeles för stort intryck på en märks det att detta är en regissör att hålla ögonen på i framtiden. Filmen tävlar detta är även i tävlingskategorin för bästa film, vilket den dock inte ska ha en chans att vinna. Dock så är det en väl berättigad ära till en person som i framtiden förhoppningsvis kommer att på allvar slåss om priset på festivalen.


Här följer även en intervju med regissören och manusförfattaren Goran Dukic som jag genomförde under Stockholms Filmfestival.

Filip Gieldon: The title of your film is ”Wristcutters – A Love Story”. That’s quite a title! Personally, that was the reason I went to see it, as well as it starred the lovely Shannyn Sossamon.

Goran Dukic: Well, there where many reasons for the title. The original was Pizzeria Kamikaze, but there is a bar in the film called “Wristcutters”, and the “A Love Story” was added to make the title less heavy and to show more what the film was about.

FG: People “offing” themselves portrayed in a comic way – sounds like a dangerous subject…

GD: Life isn’t necessarily all that bad, even when it is bad. Its mixed, and that was what I was aiming for. By putting in a bit of comedy to the film it became more approachable and that is also reflected in the title. Its about wristcutters, but it’s also a lovestory.

FG: I also noticed that the term “offing” is used throughout the film, instead of people saying “killing themselves” or “committing suicide”. Was this a conscious choice?

GD: Yes, because in the world these people come to they all have one thing in common; they have all taken their own lives. So, in this world it’s an ordinary thing and that’s why they talk about it so casually and through slang.

FG: Did you encounter any emotionally difficult research?

GD: Not really. I mean, I did some research in suicides to make it authentic, but no it wasn’t that hard.

FG: Okay, so I have to ask you – what was up with the hole in the car?

GD: Haha, well that’s a funny story. It wasn’t in the short story the film was based on, but came out of research. Me and my friend went on a road trip to get a feeling for the movie and all our stuff just kept getting lost under one of the seats. It was really weird, and that’s where that idea came from.

FG: It seems to have been a very fun film to make, being a road trip and all. However, for the suicide scenes, did you find a total change of atmosphere on the set?

GD: No, because it was all just one fun trip. Sure, a couple of those scenes were ruined because the actors smiled and there was no smiling in the parallel world, but other than that, no.

FG: Seems really evil to make a film without smiling and then casting Shannyn Sossamon, probably the nicest smile in the world.

GD: Yeah, but she did get to smile in the end!

FG: Do you have any future project you could tell me about?

GD: My next project has just started and is at the moment called “I could be you”, but that could change. It’s a modern film noir, played out in this world, not a parallel like in this film.

FG: Lastly, how do you like Stockholm and have you seen any films at the festival?

GD: Not yet cus I just got here and have only been doing promotion for my film. But I will see the city today and from the little I have seen it looks great.


Med ett utseende inte långt ifrån Peter Jackson och en orakad schaskig maneér lämnar Goran Dukic intervjun, och jag ett minne större från en väldigt intressant framtida filmskapare.
